Club Entrepreneur - "VoiceBase Inc." |
| |
| Walter Bachtiger, founder of VoiceBase, will pitch his start up to a group of panelists. Below is a small summary of what VoiceBase is all about. |
VoiceBase.com allows everyone to store their recorded voice communications online for future retrieval (through key word search), sharing with friends and partners as well as making those communications available to others.
95% of the world’s information is contained in voice communications which until now are neither systematically stored, nor searchable or shareable. |
Large corporations have been using voice storage and retrieval for years (“this call is recorded…”). VoiceBase empowers people and businesses; it saves money and time and makes them more effective. |
The impact on documentation & knowledge sharing, archiving and research and many other fields can be extreme. |

Curriculum Vitae: |
| Dr. James C. Kelley is an oceanographer with 45 years of research experience on the oceans of the world. He is primarily interested in the coastal regions of the oceans and coastal upwelling, a phenomenon which is responsible for one-half of the world’s fish catch. Jim is also interested in the multiple uses of the coastal oceans, for example for fishing, petroleum production and shipping. He is a frequent speaker on global climate change and water issues. |
| Jim was Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at San Francisco State University from 1975-2001. He was for nine years President of the California Academy of Sciences, was Chairman of the Board of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, Chairman of the East Pacific Oceanic Conference and a member of the U.S. Department of Interior’s Advisory Board on the Outer Continental Shelf which advises the Secretary on offshore drilling. "Switzerland - United States: Economic Perspectives in Times of Upheaval" |
| |
Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard will be accompanied by a rather large delegation of dignitaries among them the Ambassador of Switzerland to the United States, the President of Economiesuisse, the CEO of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce and the CEO of OSEC Business Network Switzerland as well as several high ranking representatives of major Swiss companies. |
Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker: |
Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard, Vice President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Department of Economic Affairs |
Curriculum Vitae: |
| As Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (FDEA), Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard is one of the seven members of the Federal Council, the executive authority of the Swiss Government. In 2009, Federal Councillor Leuthard is also the Vice-President of the Federal Council. |
| The FDEA is the competence centre of the Swiss Government for all core issues related to economic affairs and trade policies. In her capacity as its head, Mrs. Leuthard is responsible for the Doha Round negotiations of the World Trade Organization. While Switzerland places a priority on multilateralism in its foreign economic policy, it defends its special interests through bilateral free trade agreements. At a domestic level, the FDEA's goal is to create the regulatory framework and economic policy conditions that enable Swiss and foreign companies located in Switzerland to prosper. |
| Mrs. Leuthard is also responsible for matters relating to employment, professional education and training, technology and innovation. A main objective is to establish a favourable environment for creating jobs by establishing flexible labour market conditions. Another policy priority is to ease access to the labour market for young people, women and older workers. |
| The Federal Office for Agriculture and the Federal Veterinary Office are also part of the FDEA. Through "Agricultural Policy 2011," Mrs. Leuthard is seeking to make Swiss agriculture more competitive by gradually opening it to free market requirements while respecting sustainable development. |
| Prior to assuming her current position as Head of the FDEA on 1 August 2006, Mrs. Leuthard had been a member of the National Council for seven years and President of the Christian Democratic People's Party from 2004. During her time in the National Council, she was a member of the committees for legal affairs, political institutions, judicial affairs and economic affairs and taxation. |
| Mrs. Leuthard was born in 1963 and is a lawyer by training. She is married to Dr. Roland Hausin, a research chemist. |

Whether you are new to the Bay Area or a long time resident, here is your chance to get your questions on tax and immigration matters answered. The Expat Survival Day is an annual workshop presented by the Canadian Digital Moose Lounge who is inviting other foreign chambers to take advantage of this opportunity. While a small amount of the presented information applies to Canadians only, the vast majority is of interest to all expats in the U.S. Our member Crista Lucey’s firm, Spott, Lucey & Wall, Inc, CPA’s, is one of the co-presenters. |

The Movie "BIRD'S NEST" |
Co-sponsored by United Swiss Societies of Northern California and the Swiss Consulate General in San Francisco. |
| |
The Bird's Nest is a documentary about the famous Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron's work on China's National stadium in Beijing. Documentarians Schaub and Schindhelm tell the multi-tiered story of how the design by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron survived each grueling phase to completion: the emergence of a resonant concept through collaboration with cultural experts, the feasibility of engineering the world's largest stadium as budget battles raged, and the realization of the massive construction project within the Chinese political matrix. The architects' portfolio includes San Francico's De Young Museum. |

We are happy to announce our first social event of 2008: After a 2.5 hour guided Discovery Tour of the Di Rosa Preserve in Napa, well known for one of the largest collections of contemporary San Francisco Bay Area art in the nation with over 2,200 pieces of art by over 900 regional artists, (www.dirosapreserve.org), we will take a short ten minute drive to the Starmont Winery, owned by the Schlatter Family of Switzerland, where you will get a short tour by their winemaking staff discussing sustainable farming, tour the winery that is powered by solar energy and taste some of their award winning wines. A rustic lunch and more wine will be served immediately following the tour. The Schlatter Family agreed to make a special offer for some wines that you will taste at their Starmont winery.
