Introduction NAICS |
| NAICS, the North American Industry Classification System was introduced in 1997 and replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). NAICS is the first-ever North American industry classification system. The system was developed by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide comparable statistics across the three countries. For the first time, government and business analysts will be able to compare directly industrial production statistics collected and published in the three North American Free Trade Agreement countries. NAICS also provides for increased comparability with the International Standard Industrial Classification System (ISIC, Revision 3), developed and maintained by the United Nations. |
NAICS divides the economy into twenty sectors. Industries within these sectors are grouped according to the production criterion. Though the goods/services distinction is not explicitly reflected in the structure of NAICS, five sectors are largely goods-producing and fifteen are entirely services-producing industries.
Please note: Members are encouraged to review their business operations' own NAICS code or codes on http://www.naics.com/search.htm and notify the Chamber of any changes to info@amcham.ch |
